Balanced equations conserve each element’s atom count. Coefficients describe ratios of particles or moles, not masses. Add state symbols to distinguish solids, liquids, gases and aqueous species. Reaction classes include combination, decomposition, combustion, displacement and acid–base reactions.

To find a limiting reactant, compare available amount divided by its coefficient. The smaller value sets the reaction extent. Calculate product from that limiting amount, then compare an actual collected amount with theoretical yield if needed.

WORKED EXAMPLE

React 5 mol H₂ with 2 mol O₂.

  1. H₂ allows extent 52\frac{5}{2} = 2.5; O₂ allows extent 21\frac{2}{1} = 2.
  2. O₂ limits the reaction, producing 4 mol H₂O and leaving 1 mol H₂.
